Removal



1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Drain the coolant.

3. Remove the upper and lower sections of the intake manifold.

4. Remove the exhaust manifolds.

5. Remove the timing belt, camshaft sprockets and upper idler pulley.

6. Remove the timing belt rear cover bolts.

7. Remove the coolant pipe.

8. Remove the camshafts.

9. Remove the bolts and disconnect the wire harnesses from the rear of the heads.



10. Remove the recessed head bolts.



11. Loosen the remaining head bolts in the reverse order of tightening shown in the illustration. Loosen the bolts a quarter turn at a time.

12. Remove the heads.

Installation



1. Thoroughly clean and wipe with acetone the mating surfaces of the cylinder heads and block. If the surfaces are scratched or damaged in any way, they must be treated in a specialized workshop.



2. Using a suitable tap, clean the threads in the cylinder block. Using a suitable die, clean the cylinder head bolts.



3. Install a new gasket and install one of the heads.

4. Lubricate the bolts with clean engine oil.

5. Insert the bolts and tighten them to the specified first stage torque in the sequence shown. Do not tighten the recessed bolt.

6. Tighten the bolts another 90° and tighten the recessed bolt.

7. Install the other head in the same way.

8. Install the remaining parts.
