General information
TOYOTA vehicles are equipped with an airbag system (SRS). Together with seat belts, this system improves the safety of the driver and passenger in the event of an accident. In the event of a collision, if the system's sensor registers a longitudinal impact greater than a certain value, the airbag located in the steering wheel is immediately inflated.
Precautions for operation and maintenance
Errors in the operation and maintenance of the airbag system can lead to inadvertent operation of the system during service activities or to the failure of the system at the time of an accident. This is a serious threat to human health, therefore, before carrying out service operations (such as removing or installing parts, checking or replacing), make sure you study the rules below and strictly follow the sequence of operations described in the repair manual.
1. Never disassemble the airbag assembly in the steering wheel.
2. Do not expose the steering wheel pad to shock or strong magnetic fields.
3. Avoid heat or flames on the steering wheel pad.
4. If grease, water or other liquids get on the surface of the steering wheel pad, immediately remove them with a dry rag.
5. Do not remove the pad from the steering wheel, do not allow the operation of the steering wheel without the pad
6. Never install a steering wheel or wheel trim on another vehicle.
7. When storing, place the steering wheel pad face up on a flat, stable surface. Never put anything on the steering wheel pad.
8. If the car repair is associated with strong impacts, first loosen the fuse bolt until it rotates freely.
9. Even after a minor collision in which the airbag did not deploy, always check the lining surface and the condition of the sensor. If potholes, cracks, deformations, etc. are found, replace the airbag assembly.
10. When disposing of a vehicle or steering wheel, always deflate the air bag first.
11. The outer surface of the airbag assembly heats up when deployed. Wait for the assembly to cool down to normal temperature. Do not use water for cooling! (Optional for release models from 1996).
12. Airbag system malfunction symptoms are difficult to recognize. Always check for trouble codes before disconnecting the battery.
13. Carry out work on the airbag system no earlier than 90 seconds after setting the ignition switch to the "LOCK" and disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
