Crankshaft oil seal on the gearbox side
1. To perform this procedure, it is necessary to remove the transmission, flywheel/faceplate and engine rear shield from the vehicle (see chapter 7A or 7B and paragraph 14 of this chapter).
2. The oil seal can be replaced without removing the oil pan, the upper oil pan housing, and the oil seal housing. However, this method is not recommended, as removing and installing the oil seal can cause damage to the crankshaft and the oil seal seat, as well as damage to the oil seal itself. If you want to try, gently pry the seal up with a screwdriver and pull it out of the mounting hole. Wipe the seal seat clean and use sandpaper to remove any burrs that could cause premature damage. Lubricate the working lips of the new oil seal and the crankshaft journal with multi-purpose grease. Carefully place the oil seal onto the crankshaft with the working edges facing inward. Using a piece of metal pipe or a suitable head with an outside diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the mounting hole, use it as a mandrel and evenly press the seal into the mounting hole to the depth marked during removal.
3. The next method is much preferable, but it requires removing the engine oil pan, the upper oil pan housing, and the oil seal housing. Descriptions of the procedures for removing the oil pan and its upper housing can be found in paragraphs 12 and 13, with the difference that in this case there is no need to remove the oil pump.
4. Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the oil seal housing, then thoroughly clean any traces of sealant from the oil seal housing and cylinder block.
5. Place the oil seal housing on wooden blocks and use a screwdriver and hammer to knock out the old oil seal from the back side.
6. Press the new oil seal into the housing using a wooden block or a piece of pipe whose outside diameter is slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the oil seal.
7. Apply a 2-3 mm wide bead of sealant to the mating flange of the seal housing so that it goes around the holes for the mounting bolts from the inside.
8. Lubricate the crankshaft journal and the working lip of the oil seal with multi-purpose grease.
9. Slowly and carefully place the housing together with the oil seal onto the crankshaft journal, using a smooth object such as a ratchet extension to help you.
10. Install and tighten the oil seal housing mounting bolts to the torque specified in Specifications.
11. Install the upper oil pan housing and oil pan as described in paragraphs 12 and 13.
12. Install the engine rear shield, flywheel/faceplate and gearbox as described in Chapter 7A or 7B.
