Replacing the crankshaft oil seal [Toyota Corolla Verso-AR10]

Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

Drain the engine oil.

After draining the engine oil, install a new gasket and drain plug.

Tightening torque: 34 Nm.

Remove the crankshaft pulley.

Remove the support roller.

Disconnect the engine wiring harness.

Remove timing belt drive cover No.2.

Remove timing belt drive cover No.1.

Remove the timing belt drive support roller.

Remove the transverse engine support bracket.

Set the piston of cylinder No.1 to TDC of the compression stroke.

Remove the timing chain cover plate.

Remove the timing belt drive.

Removal the crankshaft pulley

If the crankshaft pulley cannot be removed by hand, remove it using the SST (fig. 2.381).

Removal the crankshaft oil seal



Use a knife to cut the working edge of the seal.

Remove the seal using a screwdriver.

Note: Be careful not to damage the crankshaft. Wrap the screwdriver blade with electrical tape (fig. 2.382).


Installing the crankshaft oil seal



Apply a general purpose grease to the edge of the new seal.

Note: The seal seating surface must be free of sand, dirt and other foreign particles.

Using the SST drift and a hammer, press the new seal until its surface is flush with the edge of the oil pump (fig. 2.383).

Installing the timing gear on the crankshaft



Aligning the groove in the gear with the key on the shaft, place the gear on the crankshaft.

Using SST and a hammer, press the pulley in so that the steering angle sensor faces inward (fig. 2.384).

Note: Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
