Warning. Allow the engine to cool completely before starting work.

Removal

1. Remove the cable from the negative battery terminal.

2. Disconnect the oxygen sensor connector and release its wiring. If you are installing a new exhaust manifold, remove the sensor (see Chapter 6A).

3. Remove the top heat-insulating screen (see Figure 6.3).

Figure 6.3. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield (the mounting bolts are shown by arrows).

4. Lubricate the exhaust manifold bolts and nuts with penetrating lubricant.

5. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.

6. Remove the exhaust manifold mounting bracket (some models have two brackets installed) and the lower thermal insulation screen (see figure 6.6).

Figure 6.6. Disconnect the exhaust manifold mounting bracket near the front engine mount (the mounting bolts are shown by arrows).

7. Loosen the nuts and remove the exhaust manifold (see Figure 6.7).

Installation

8. Using a scraper, remove all traces of old gasket and carbon deposits from the mating surfaces of the exhaust manifold and cylinder head. If the gasket "leaked", the manifold must be taken to a specialized workshop to check the curvature of the seating surface and (if necessary) its grinding.

9. Place the new gasket, aligning the corresponding holes with the mounting pins on the cylinder head.

10. Install the exhaust manifold in its place and tighten the mounting nuts.

11. Tighten the nuts to the specified torque (see Specifications). Tighten in three to four stages, starting from the center and ending at the edges, to avoid distortion of the collector sediment surface.

12. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.

13. Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks.
