Front crankshaft oil seal

1. Remove the timing belt and crankshaft sprocket (see paragraph 7).

2. After marking the depth of the oil seal in the mounting hole, carefully pry it up with a screwdriver and pull it out of the oil pump assembly (see Figure 8.2,a).

Figure 8.2,a. Wrap the end of a screwdriver with electrical tape, carefully pry the front crankshaft oil seal out of the mounting hole.

Try not to damage anything - neither the oil pump unit, nor the crankshaft, nor the mounting hole for the oil seal (a scratch on the crankshaft can cause a leak).

Note: It will be easier to remove the old seal if you cut its sealing edge with a sharp knife (see figure 8.2.6).

Figure 8.2, b. It is easier to remove the seal if you make cuts on the working edge.

3. Clean and inspect the oil seal seat and crankshaft journal. Minor burrs can be removed with sandpaper. If there is a deep groove on the working surface of the neck (the result of the hardened working edge of the seal and dirt), installing a new seal in the same place may not fix the problem.

4. Lubricate the new seal with multi-purpose grease or clean engine oil and press it into place using a suitable mandrel (the outer diameter of the mandrel should be slightly smaller than the outer diameter of the seal) and a hammer (see Figure 8.4).

Figure 8.4. Carefully press the new oil seal into place, with the spring side facing the engine.

The pressing depth of the new and old oil seals must be the same. After installing the oil seal, check that the spring is in place.

5. Install the crankshaft sprocket and timing belt (see paragraph 7).

6. Start the engine and check for leaks.
