Attention! Models covered in this manual are equipped with an assisted restraint system (SRS) — «airbag system». To prevent accidental deployment of airbags, which could result in injury, be sure to deactivate the airbag system before working near components of the airbag system (see paragraph 25).
Note. Multifunction switches (also called «paddle shifters» and «steering column switches») are two separate switch banks connected to a central plastic switch housing that surrounds the steering column. The first multi-function switch controls the headlights and turn signals: the right switch controls the windshield washer/wipe system. They can be replaced individually.
1. Disconnect the wire «masses» from battery (see paragraph 1 of chapter 5).
2. Remove the upper and lower casings of the steering column.
3. The multi-function switches are attached to the switch housing in one of two ways, depending on the year and model. On Lexus models 1999-2003 each switch is attached to the switch body with a pair of screws. On 2004 and later Lexus models and all Toyota models, the switches are secured to the switch housing with latches that must be pressed to release the switches (pic. 8.3, a, b).

Pic. 8.3b. To disconnect any multifunction switch from the unit on Lexus 2804 and later and all Toyota models, press the clip with a screwdriver and remove the switch
4. Remove the multifunction switch and disconnect the appropriate electrical connectors.
5. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
