The knock sensor is designed to register knocking in the cylinders and reduce the ignition timing. On 4-cylinder engines, the sensor is screwed into the cylinder block under the head; on 6-cylinder engines, there are 2 sensors that are screwed under the intake manifold.

Examination

1. The circuit between the sensor output and its body must not be short-circuited. Otherwise, replace the sensor.

Replacement

1. Disconnect the battery from ground.

2. When the engine is cold, drain 3–4 liters of fluid.

3. On 6-cylinder engines, remove the intake manifold (see subsection 3.2.5.).

4. Disconnect the connector and remove the sensor. On 6-cylinder engines, the knock sensor is mounted under the intake manifold.

5. Tighten the new sensor to 36 Nm (the sealant on the threads of the new sensor is applied by the manufacturer).
