Attention! Cars are equipped with security systems (SRS), including airbags and seat belt tensioners. Before carrying out work near the shock sensors, the instrument panel and the steering column, first disconnect the negative and then the positive terminals from the battery and wait 2 minutes. This will prevent unauthorized deployment of the airbags and deployment of the seat belt pretensioners, which could cause injury.
Remove the steering gear as follows:
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the wire «masses» from the battery.
Remove the steering wheel, then turn the ignition key to the LOCK position to block the steering shaft from rotating, otherwise the airbag coil wire may be damaged.
Apply the parking brake and chock the rear wheels.
Loosen the front wheel nuts. Raise the front of the car and place it on stands. Remove the front wheels.
Remove the bottom protection of a motor compartment.

Install a liquid collection tray under the engine compartment. Disconnect the power steering hoses from the steering gear and plug them with plastic plugs to prevent excessive fluid leakage and contamination from entering the system (pic. 13.13).
Pic. 13.14. Marking locations (1) on the joint of the intermediate shaft and the input shaft of the steering mechanism and the location of the pinch bolt (2)
Remove the lower universal joint cover, mark the relative position of the intermediate shaft joint and the input shaft of the steering mechanism and unscrew the lower pinch bolt (pic. 13.14).
Remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.
Further removal for models up to 2001 of release is carried out as follows:
Pic. 13.10. The location of the nut, fixed with a pin, fastening the trunnion of the ball joint of the tie rod end to the steering knuckle
- unscrew the bolts and nuts securing the ball joints to the lower control arms of the front suspension (see fig. 13.10, 13.11);
Pic. 13.11. Using a puller to force the tie rod end ball joint pin out of the steering knuckle
- use a pry bar to separate the ball joints from the lower control arms of the front suspension;
- remove the front section of the exhaust system;
Pic. 13.15. Arrangement of the left bolts of fastening of a cross beam on models till 2001
- support the front suspension cross member with a jack, unscrew the fastening bolts and lower it together with the lower arms, steering gear and anti-roll bar (pic. 13.15);
- when the cross member is lowered, the steering shaft must come out of the intermediate shaft universal joint socket.
Further removal for models from 2001 is as follows:
Pic. 13.16. The location of the left steering gear mounting bolts on models from 2001
- remove the steering gear mounting bolts (pic. 13.16);
- separate the intermediate shaft from the steering gear input shaft, then remove the steering gear.
Install the steering mechanism in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following:
When connecting the input shaft of the steering mechanism to the universal joint of the intermediate shaft, align the marks made before removal.
Make sure the front wheels are set to drive straight ahead, then center the airbag coil wire.
Turn the coiled wire bushing counterclockwise until it stops, but do not apply too much force, as the wire may be broken.
Turn the coiled wire bushing clockwise 2.5 turns and align the alignment marks.
Install the steering wheel and airbag.
Pour fluid into the power steering reservoir and bleed the air from the hydraulic system.
