Warning! The car models covered in this manual are equipped with an additional security system (SRS). Before doing any work near the airbag unit, steering column or instrument panel, turn off the SRS to avoid injury if it is accidentally deployed (see Onboard electrical equipment). SRS circuit wiring is easily identified by the yellow color of the insulation. To avoid damage to the SRS system, make sure that the steering shaft does not turn after removing the steering wheel. Block the column with the ignition key with the front wheels straight ahead.
Steering Assembly Components
Steering Gear Installation Components
1. Park the vehicle with the front wheels turned straight ahead. Engage the parking brake. Loosen the wheel nuts, jack up the front of the car and place it on jack stands. Remove the front wheels and crankcase protection.
2. Disconnect the side tie rods from the steering knuckles (see Section Check of a condition, removal and installation of drafts of a steering drive).
3. Remove the anti-roll bar (see Section Removal and installation of the front anti-roll bar).
4. Mark position of an intermediate shaft concerning the steering mechanism and turn out a through bolt of a connecting universal joint of a steering shaft.
5. Disconnect the pressure and return lines of the hydraulic path from the crankcase of the steering mechanism (refer to illustration Steering Assembly Components).
6. Remove fasteners (C and D) mounting bracket on the right side of the assembly, give the nut and remove the through bolt (B) left. Finally, remove the bolt (A) (refer to illustration Steering Gear Installation Components).
7. Remove the steering gear assembly from the vehicle.
8. If, for any reason, the steering shaft was rotated when the steering mechanism was removed, remove the steering wheel and center the airbag contact drum (see Section Removal and installation of a steering wheel).
9. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Make sure all fasteners are tightened to the correct torque.
10. Finally, bleed the power steering system (see Section Removing air from the hydraulic path of the power steering system).
