If the engine cannot be started, it must be thoroughly checked. To start a gasoline engine, two basic conditions must be met. The fuel-air mixture must be supplied to the engine cylinders, and the ignition system must generate a spark. First of all, it is necessary to check whether fuel is supplied at all. How fuel is supplied is described in the sections "Carburetor" and "Injection system".

Caution: For vehicles with a catalytic converter, do not press the starter for a long time unless necessary, as this may damage the catalytic converter.
