Note. Recommended interval: every 50,000 km or 24 months.
Note. The cover and rotor of the ignition distributor are equipped with cars only up to 1997 of release. Cars produced from 1988 to 2000 are equipped with a contactless ignition system.
Note. Cars produced before 2001 have high-voltage wires, and since 2001, ignition coils are installed directly on the spark plugs.
Check the high voltage wires every time you install spark plugs. Start a visual check with the engine running. In a darkened garage, start the engine and watch every wire. If there is an internal break in the wire, an electrical arc or spark will be visible at the fault. In this case, replace the wire.
Shut off and cool the engine, then check the distributor cap and rotor.
To avoid confusion, remove and inspect the high-voltage wires one at a time.
Pic. 2.30. Removing a tip with a high-voltage wire from a spark plug on cars before 2001
Pulling up and turning at the same time, remove the tip with the high voltage wire from the spark plug (pic. 2.30). Do not pull directly on the high voltage wire.
Check the tip for signs of corrosion in the form of a white solid powder.
Replace the tip with the high-voltage wire by pressing it and turning it at the same time until it is clearly fixed.
Wipe the high-voltage wire along its entire length with a clean rag, removing dirt and grease from it. Check the wire for melting, cracks, or other damage. Do not make sharp bends in the wire, as the inner conductor may break.
Pic. 2.33. Using a screwdriver blade to remove the protective boot with high voltage wire from the distributor cap
Using a screwdriver blade, remove the protective cover with a high-voltage wire from the ignition distributor cover on cars manufactured before 1998, or from the ignition coil on cars manufactured from 1998 to 2000 (pic. 2.33).
Check the inside of the protective cover for signs of corrosion. Connect the high voltage wire.
Similarly, check the condition of the remaining high-voltage wires.
Pic. 2.34. The location of the screw securing the cover of the distributor of ignition on cars manufactured before 1998
On cars manufactured before 1998, remove the screws and remove the ignition distributor cover (pic. 2.34). From the inside, check the cover for cracks, coal «tracks», melting, burning and unreliable contacts.
Pic. 2.35. Removing the screws securing the rotor of the ignition distributor on cars manufactured before 1998
Turn out two screws and remove a rotor of the distributor of ignition (pic. 2.35). Check the rotor for cracks, carbon «tracks», burning of the side and central electrodes.
In the presence of any damages replace a cover and a rotor of the distributor of ignition. It is recommended that when replacing high-voltage wires, also replace the cover and rotor of the ignition distributor.
If an old ignition distributor cover with high-voltage wires is installed on the car, measure the resistance between the free ends of the wires and the internal electrodes in the cover with an ohmmeter, which should not exceed 25,000 ohms.
