Note. Recommended interval: every 50,000 km or 24 months.
Note. Some filters are perforated screens that can be cleaned with solvents rather than replaced.
Attention! The temperature of the oil in the gearbox can reach 170°C, so protective gloves must be worn.
Change the oil in an automatic transmission immediately after a trip. Hot oil is more effective than cold oil in removing sediment from the gearbox.
Raise the car on a lift.
Pic. 2.41. Removing the oil drain plug from the automatic transmission
Install a container to collect oil under the drain plug in the automatic transmission pan. Remove the drain plug (pic. 2.41). After draining the oil, reinstall the plug and tighten to 17.6 Nm on vehicles prior to 2001 or to 47.4 Nm on vehicles from 2001.
Pic. 2.42. Turning with a 10 mm key (1) rear final drive fluid drain plugs on vehicles since 2001 and 2WD vehicles
Vehicles since 2001 and 2WD vehicles also have a reverse final drive drain plug. Move a container to collect oil under the drain plug of the rear final drive and remove the drain plug (pic. 2.42). After draining the oil, reinstall the plug and tighten to 54 Nm.
Remove the front and loosen the rear bolts securing the automatic transmission pan. Use a screwdriver blade or pry bar to tilt the front of the sump away from the automatic transmission case and drain the remaining oil in the sump. Turn out back bolts of fastening of the pallet and remove it.
Pic. 2.43. Removing the automatic transmission fluid filter bolt
Turn out bolts of fastening of the filter, release clips (on some models) and remove the filter (pic. 2.43). Be careful when removing the filter as there is residual liquid in the filter.
Install new (or washed) filter, fix it with clips and bolts, tightening them with a torque of 9.5 Nm.
Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the pan and crankcase of the automatic transmission.
Pic. 2.44. The location of the magnets on the pallet of the automatic transmission
Mark the location of the magnets on the pallet, remove and clean them. Wash the tray in clean solvent, dry it with compressed air and reinstall the magnets (pic. 2.44).
Install the pallet with a new gasket on the gearbox housing and secure with bolts.
Lower the car.
Fill in fresh oil through the guide tube of the automatic transmission oil level gauge. Fill with oil in small portions, while constantly checking its level.
Start the engine, apply the parking brake and move the selector lever from position P to position L, holding it briefly in intermediate positions, then back to position P.
With the engine running at idling speed, check the oil level in the automatic transmission. Add oil to the upper mark corresponding to a cold gearbox.
