Caution: When starting the engine for the first time, keep a suitable fire extinguisher handy.

1. After installing the engine in the vehicle, check the oil and coolant levels again. Remove the spark plugs (see Chapter 1A) or glow plugs (see chapter 5) from the engine.

2. On gasoline engines, relieve the fuel system pressure and disable the ignition system by disconnecting the wiring connectors from the ignition coil/module assembly (see chapter 5). In diesel engines, disconnect the wiring connectors from the injectors (see chapter 4B).

3. Crank the engine with the starter until the oil pressure warning light goes out.

4. Tighten the spark plugs (glow plugs) and connect all wiring connectors.

5. Start the engine as usual, ignoring the fact that it may take longer to start, since the fuel system has been opened and air has probably entered it.

6. If the engine starts, let it idle. Check thoroughly for oil, coolant and fuel leaks. Don't be alarmed if smoke appears from engine parts, which, as they warm up, evaporate the remaining oil and kerosene.

7. Turn off the engine and check the oil and coolant levels again.

8. Take a drive on a free road. Increase the speed from 50 to 80 km/h by pressing the accelerator pedal all the way down, then reduce the revs. Repeat this procedure 10-12 times. This will apply pressure to the piston rings and cause them to rub against the cylinder walls. Check for leaks again.

9. For the first 1000 km of driving, do not overload the engine, constantly monitoring the oil level: at first, oil consumption may be higher than normal.

10. After 1000 km, change the engine oil and filter.

11. For the next thousand kilometers, try not to drive too hard or over-accelerate.

12. After 3000 km, change the oil and filter again and make sure that the engine has been properly broken in.
