Engine repair — assembly sequence [Toyota RAV4 XA20]

1. Before starting assembly, make sure that you have purchased all the necessary spare parts and have all the necessary tools. Please read the assembly manual to familiarize yourself with the work ahead and ensure you have everything you need to complete it. In addition to the tool, prepare the required amount of sealant (including anaerobic, for fixing threaded connections). It is recommended to use genuine Toyota sealants, specially designed for these purposes (it can be purchased from a Toyota dealer).

2. To avoid problems and wasted time, assemble the engine in the following order:

• Crankshaft (paragraph 19).
• Pistons with connecting rods assembled (paragraphs 20 and 21).
• Oil pump, oil receiver and oil pump cover (partsA, B and IN of this chapter).
• Engine oil pan (partsA, B and IN of this chapter).
• Flywheel/faceplate (parts A and IN of this chapter).
• Cylinder head (partsA, B and IN of this chapter).
• Timing belt/chain, tensioner, sprockets and idler pulleys (parts A, B and IN of this chapter).
• Intake and exhaust manifolds (partsA, B and IN of this chapter).
• Engine attachments.

Before starting assembly, all components must be thoroughly washed, dried, and all faults must be corrected. Lay out the components in the order they will be installed, on a clean workbench or in separate clean boxes.
