Checking the tilt steering column [Toyota Corona T190]

1. Check the ignition switch bracket. Check that the steering wheel lock mechanism works properly.

2. If necessary, replace the ignition lock cylinder.
  • a) Set the ignition key to the "ACC" position.
  • b) Press the locking pin with a thin rod and remove the lock cylinder.
  • c) Make sure the ignition key is in the "ACC" position.
  • d) Install a new ignition lock cylinder.

3. Check that the bearing rotates smoothly, without jamming or making any extraneous noise. If the bearing is worn or damaged, replace the steering column tube.

4. Check the main shaft bushing.
  • a) Using a screwdriver, remove the bushing.
  • b) Check the bushing.
  • c) Align the tabs on the new bushing with the holes in the steering column tube and insert the bushing into the tube.
  • d) Apply grease to the bushing.
