- A) (For vehicles with S series engines) Using the special tool, disconnect the pressure pipe from the steering gear housing.
- b) (For other vehicles) Disconnect the pressure line from the pump or from the steering gear housing.
- V) Connect the pressure gauge as shown in the figure.
- G) Pump the system. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock two or three times.
- d) Check the fluid level.
2. Check that the fluid temperature is at least 80°C.
3. Start the engine and set the idle speed.
4. Check the pressure of the working fluid with the pressure gauge valve closed. Close the pressure gauge valve and measure the pressure. Minimum allowable pressure:
- Engines 2C, 3S-GE: 7350 kPa
- 3S-FE engines: 6860 kPa
- Engines 4A-FE.: 6370 kPa
Note:
- do not keep the tap closed for more than 10 seconds.
- do not let the working fluid temperature become too high.
5. Check fluid pressure with gauge valve open.
- A) With the engine idling, open the valve fully.
- b) Measure fluid pressure at engine speeds of 1000 rpm and 3000 rpm. The maximum allowable pressure difference is 490 kPa.
6. Check up pressure of a liquid at turn of a steering wheel in extreme position. With the engine idling and the valve fully open, turn the steering wheel to the maximum angle. Minimum allowable pressure:
- Engines 2C, 3S-GE: 7350 kPa
- 3S-FE engines: 6860 kPa
- 4A-FE engines: 6370 kPa
Attention:
- do not hold the steering wheel in the extreme position for more than 10 seconds.
- do not let the working fluid temperature become too high.
7. Checking the effort on the steering wheel. Note: Before checking, check the tire pressure, tire type and contact surface.
- A) Center the steering wheel, start the engine and set the idle speed.
- b) (For vehicles equipped with an airbag) Using a spring dynamometer, measure the force on the steering wheel in both directions. Maximum allowable force:
- 3S-GE engines: 54 N
- Other engines: 49 N
(For vehicles not equipped with an airbag) Using a torque wrench, measure the force on the steering wheel in both directions. Maximum allowable force:
- 3S-GE engines: 8.8 Nm
- Other engines: 7.8 Nm
If the force on the steering wheel is more than the maximum allowable, repair the power steering.
