Starter (3S-GE (1.0 kW and 1.4 kW); 4A-FE and 7A-FE (1.0 kW); 3S-FE (1.2 kW); 2C (1.4 kW)): 1 - retaining ring, 2 - drive gear, 3 - spring, 4 - drive gear side cover, 5 - idler gear, 6 - bearing, 7 - freewheel, 8 - spring, 9 - freewheel shaft, 10 - ball, 11 - bearing holder, 12 - spring holder, 13 - stop sleeve, 14 - return spring, 15 - weight pane, 16 - front bearing, 17 - armature, 18 - rear bearing, 19 - housing (complete with stator winding), 20 - brush holder, 21 - collector side cover
1. (3S-FE, 4S-FE) Remove the duster.
2. (2S, 2S-T) Remove the wire lead by unscrewing the screw and removing the spring washer.
3. Remove the starter housing and anchor.
- A) Unscrew the nut and disconnect the wiring from the traction relay connector.
- b) Unscrew the two tie bolts and pull the starter housing together with the armature from the traction relay.
- V) (Except 4A-FE) Remove the O-ring.
4. Remove the drive side cover and freewheel assembly with drive gear.
- A) Remove two screws.
- b) Remove the following parts from the traction relay:
- (Starter 1.0 kW and 1.2 kW):
- (1) drive side starter cover
- (2) intermediate gear,
- 3) bearing,
- (Starters 1.4 kW and 2.2 kW):
- (1) starter cover on the drive gear side and overrunning clutch assembly,
- (2) return spring,
- (3) drive gear,
- (4) bearing,
5. Using a magnetic pin, remove the steel ball from the hole in the freewheel shaft as shown in the illustration.
6. Remove the brush holder and brushes.
- A) Loosen the two screws, remove the two O-rings and the manifold side starter cover from the housing.
- b) Remove the O-ring from the body.
- V) Using a screwdriver, depress the brush spring and disconnect the brush from the brush holder. Disconnect 4 brushes and remove the brush holder.

6. Remove the armature from the stator.
