Starter (3S-GE (1.0 kW and 1.4 kW); 4A-FE and 7A-FE (1.0 kW); 3S-FE (1.2 kW); 2C (1.4 kW)): 1 - retaining ring, 2 - pinion gear, 3 - spring, 4 - cover on the drive pinion side, 5 - intermediate gear, 6 - bearing, 7 - overrunning clutch, 8 - spring, 9 - overrunning clutch shaft, 10 - ball, 11 - bearing holder, 12 - spring holder, 13 - limit sleeve, 14 - return spring, 15 - gravitation pane, 16 - front bearing, 17 - anchor, 18 - rear bearing, 19 - housing (complete with stator winding), 20 - brush holder, 21 - cover on the collector side
1. (3S-FE, 4S-FE) Remove the dust cover.
2. (2C, 2C-T) Remove the wire lead by unscrewing the screw and removing the spring washer.
3. Remove the starter housing and armature.
- a) Unscrew the nut and disconnect the wiring from the traction relay connector.
- b) Unscrew the two tie bolts and pull the starter housing together with the anchor out of the traction relay.
- v) (Except 4A-FE) Remove the O-ring.
4. Remove the drive side cover and the overrunning clutch assembly with the drive gear.
- a) Unscrew the two screws.
- b) Remove the following parts from the traction relay:
- (Starter 1.0 kW and 1.2 kW):
- (1) starter cover on the drive side,
- (2) intermediate gear,
- 3) bearing,
- (Starters 1.4 kW and 2.2 kW):
- (1) starter cover on the drive gear side and overrunning clutch assembly,
- (2) return spring,
- (3) drive gear,
- (4) bearing,
5. Using a magnetic pin, remove the steel ball from the hole in the overrunning clutch shaft as shown in the figure.
6. Remove the brush holder and brushes.
- a) Remove the two screws, two O-rings and the starter cover from the manifold side of the housing.
- b) Remove the O-ring from the housing.
- c) Using a screwdriver, press the brush spring and detach the brush from the brush holder. Detach the 4 brushes and remove the brush holder.

6. Remove the anchor from the stator.
