Starter circuit diagram

If the magnetic starter is defective, the starter pinion does not engage with the engine flywheel ring gear. This prevents the engine from starting.
Examination
Remove the starter.
Starter without gearbox
Starter with gearbox
Disconnect the excitation winding wire from terminal C.
Connect the electromagnetic starter with a wire to the battery according to Fig. G-5432. The starter drive gear should move forward.
Attention: Close the circuit no later than 5 seconds later. Otherwise, the starter winding may burn out.
Disconnect the ground wire from terminal C. The starter drive pinion should remain in the extended position. Otherwise, replace the starter.
Disconnect the ground wire from the starter housing. The starter drive gear should retract back. Otherwise, replace the starter.
Removal

Remove the two mounting bolts and the starter wire terminal from the starter housing and remove the starter. Fig. G-5430 shows a starter without a gearbox.
Installation
Install the magnetic starter on the starter.
Check the starter as described above.
Install the starter in place.
