To start an internal combustion engine, a small electric motor called a starter is needed. To start the engine, it must be spun up to at least 300 rpm.
The starter consists of a drive part, a housing with poles and a collector part. The pole and collector parts contain the anchor, collector and brush holder. Carbon brushes wear out over time. If the brushes are heavily worn, the starter may fail.
The drive part of the housing contains a gear transmission. After the ignition is turned on, the starter is powered by the battery. By means of a magnetic starter located in the starter housing, its gear meshes with the toothed ring of the engine flywheel. After this, the engine can be started. After the engine is started, the starter is spun in the opposite direction by the engine and the starter's connection with it is terminated.
Starting the engine requires a high current. Therefore, during maintenance, special attention must be paid to the quality of the connections. Corrosion in the wire connection is not allowed. To do this, it is necessary to cover the contacts with protective grease.
Depending on the engine type, COROLLA has starters of different capacities: petrol engines have a 0.8-/1.0 kW starter, diesel engines - 1.4-/2.0-/2.5 kW.
Note: Depending on the type, the starter may be a replaceable part. This means that when buying a refurbished or new starter, the old starter can be returned and its cost will be taken into account when paying.
Removal
Disconnect the ground (-) cable from the battery.

Attention: this will erase the entries in the trip computer memory. In particular, the fault record and the radio receiver code. Before disconnecting the battery, read the section "Removal and installation the battery".
Disconnect terminal 50 (to the ignition switch) on the starter.
Disconnect the battery cable from terminal 30.
Remove the two bolts from the gearbox and remove the starter from the clutch housing.
Installation
Install the starter and secure it with bolts.
Secure the wire to terminal 30 with a force of 15 Nm.
Connect the plug connection to terminal 50.
Connect the ground (-) cable to the battery.
Set the time on the clock, if you have one, and enter the code into the radio receiver.
