17. Clamp the camshaft in a vice with soft jaws.
18. Insert a technological bolt into a non-threaded hole along the auxiliary camshaft gear. Using a screwdriver, align the holes in the camshaft driven gear and the auxiliary neck by turning the camshaft gear clockwise. Screw a second access bolt into the threaded hole and tighten to compress the gears together. Remove the access bolt from the non-threaded hole. Repeat the procedure for the other exhaust camshaft.
19. Apply molybdenum based grease or engine oil to the tappets and then install them into the original mounting holes in the cylinder heads. Install the valve shims to their original positions in the tappets.
20. Apply grease for installing camshafts on the cams of the final camshaft, journals. Bearings and thrust surfaces for mounting gears.
21. Install the exhaust camshaft in its original location in the cylinder head so that the dowel on the auxiliary gear faces the center of the head.
22. Apply a light coat of RTV sealant to the outer edges of the mating surfaces of the front bearing caps and cylinder heads.
23. Install the bearing caps in order so that the arrows on them point towards the end of the engine where the timing belt is located.
24. Tighten the bearing cap bolts ¼ turn per set to the specified torque listed in the Specifications at the beginning of this chapter. Start at the center lid and move towards the edges.
25. Install a new camshaft seal (see paragraph 9).
26. Apply camshaft mounting grease to intake camshaft lobes, bearing journals, and gear mounting thrust surfaces. If the VVT block was removed from the intake camshaft, install it so that its groove is aligned with the pin on the camshaft. Lubricate the threads and screw in a new nut and tighten it to the prescribed torque specified in Specifications at the beginning of this chapter.
27. Install the intake camshaft in its original place, and the cylinder head so that the alignment mark is aligned with the alignment mark of the exhaust camshaft (rice. 10.3).
Note. On the right (rear) cylinder head, align the two dots on the intake camshaft gear with the two dots on the exhaust camshaft gear. On the left (front) cylinder head, align one point on the intake camshaft gear with one point on the exhaust camshaft gear.
28. Install the bearing caps in numerical order with the arrows facing the front end of the engine (where is the timing belt located).
29. Tighten the bearing cap bolts ¼ turn per set to the specified torque as specified in Specifications at the beginning of this chapter. Start at the center lid and move towards the edges.
30. Turn out a technological bolt from an auxiliary gear wheel of a final camshaft.
31. Reinstall the rear timing belt cover, camshaft pulleys and timing belt (see paragraph 8). Before installing, inspect the gasket on the back cover of the timing belt. If there is minor damage, repair it with RTV sealant. If there are no large fragments, scrape off the old gasket material and install a new gasket.
32. Reinstall the remaining elements, working in the reverse order of removal.
33. Before installing the cylinder head covers, apply RTV sealant to the areas shown (rice. 4.9). Clean the rubber domes for the back of the heads and reinstall them with new RTV sealant.
34. The rest of the installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
35. Start the engine and check for proper operation. Then check it for leaks.
