Removing
1. Remove the cylinder head covers.
2. On the 3VZ-FE engine, remove the ignition distributor.
3. On both heads, the camshafts that control the exhaust valves are removed first. Before removing the camshafts, the alignment marks on the camshaft gears must be aligned.
4. Using an additional bolt, secure the removable spring-loaded gear to the fixed gear of the exhaust camshaft.
5. Working in reverse order to that shown, loosen the camshaft bearing cap bolts half a turn each pass until the bolts are completely loose.
6. Remove the camshaft that controls the exhaust valves.
7. Working in reverse order to that shown, loosen the intake camshaft bearing cap bolts half a turn each pass until the bolts are completely loose.
8. Remove the camshaft bearing caps and O-ring and remove the camshaft from the cylinder head.
9. Remove and install the camshafts on the left cylinder head in the same way.
10. If necessary, remove the valve lifters along with the shims from the cylinder head and store them so that they can be reinstalled in their original locations.
11. Install the camshaft that controls the exhaust valves in a vice with soft jaws.
12. Install a special wrench with two pins at the end into two technological holes of the spring-loaded gear, turn the gear clockwise and unscrew the additional bolt that secures the spring-loaded gear to the camshaft gear, and slowly release the spring-loaded gear.
13. Remove the snap ring securing the spring-loaded gear.
14. Remove the circlip, gear and circlip from the exhaust camshaft.
Examination
See subsection 2.10.2.
Installation
1. Install the circlip, gear, circlip and circlip onto the exhaust camshaft.
2. Secure the camshaft in a soft jaw vise.
3. Using a special wrench with two pins, turn the spring-loaded gear clockwise until the holes for the additional bolt are aligned. Screw an additional bolt into the camshaft gear.
4. Lubricate the valve tappets with clean engine oil and install them in the cylinder head in place.
Camshaft controlling the intake valves of the right head
1. Lubricate the cams, bearing journals and thrust surfaces of the camshaft gears with clean engine oil.
2. Install the camshaft in the cylinder head so that the marks on the gear (two dots) were directed to the camshaft that controls the intake valves.
3. Apply a thin layer of sealant to the outside of the mating surfaces of the front camshaft cover.
4. Install the camshaft bearing cap so that the arrows on the caps point towards the front of the engine.
5. Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts by turning them 1/3 turn at a time in the order shown in the figure.
6. Install a new camshaft seal.

Rings removed from the camshaft that controls the exhaust valves
1 - spring thrust ring;
2 - gear;
3 - spring ring
1. Lubricate the cams, bearing journals and thrust surfaces of the camshaft gears with clean engine oil.
2. Install the camshaft in the cylinder head so that the marks on the gear (two dots) were directed to the camshaft that controls the intake valves.
3. Install the camshaft bearing caps with the arrows pointing towards the front of the engine.
4. Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts by turning them 1/3 turn for each pass in the sequence shown in the figure.
5. Unscrew the additional bolt from the camshaft gear.
6. Remove and install the camshafts on the left cylinder head in the same way.
7. Install the toothed belt.
8. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
