Checking the end compression pressure [Toyota Corona T190]

Note: If lack of power, increased oil and/or fuel consumption is observed, measure the end compression pressure.


1. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature and stop it. (Petrol engines)

2. (3S-GE) Disconnect the cold start injector connector.

3. Disconnect the distributor or contactless ignition system integrated unit connectors.

4. Disconnect the high-voltage wires from the spark plugs.

Note: Do not pull the wires. Pulling or bending the wires may cause internal breaks.


5. Remove the spark plugs using a special 16 mm spark plug wrench. (Diesel engines)

6 Disconnect the fuel shut-off solenoid valve connector wire.

7. Remove the seals, unscrew the nuts and remove the glow plug bus.

8. Remove the glow plugs. (All engines)

9. Check the compression pressure in the cylinder.
  • a) (Except 2C, 2C-T) Insert the compression tester into the spark plug hole. (2C, 2C-T) Screw the compression tester into the glow plug hole.


  • b) (Petrol engines) Open the throttle valve fully. Measure the compression pressure by cranking the engine with the starter.

Note: Always use a fully charged battery to obtain engine speed of 250 rpm or more.




Note: Measurements should be taken in as short a time as possible.

  • Nominal pressure:
    • 3S-FE, 4A-FE, 4S-FE, 5E-FE, 7A-FE - 13.0 bar or more
    • 3S-GE - 12.5 bar
    • 2C. 2C-T - 30 bar
  • Minimum pressure:
    • 3S-FE, 4A-FE, 4S-FE, 7A-FE - 9.5 bar
    • 3S-GE, 5E-FE - 10.0 bar
    • 2C, 2C-T - 25 bar
  • Pressure differences between cylinders:
    • 3S-FE, 3S-GE, 4A-FE, 4S-FE, 5E-FE, 7A-FE - not more than 1.0 bar
    • 2C, 2C-T - no more than 5.0 bar

  • d) Repeat steps (a) through (c) for each cylinder.
  • d) If the end compression pressure is low, pour a small amount of engine oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole and repeat steps (a) through (c) for cylinders with low compression pressure.
    • If adding oil increases the compression pressure, the piston rings and/or cylinder bore may be worn or damaged
    • If the pressure remains low, the valve may be sticking or not seating properly, or there may be a leak through the cylinder head gasket. (Petrol engines)

10. Install the spark plugs.
  • Tightening torque - 18 Nm

11. Connect the high-voltage wires to the spark plugs.

12. Connect the distributor or integrated ignition unit connectors.

13. (3S-GE) Connect the cold start injector connector. (Diesel engines)

14. Connect the wire to the fuel shut-off solenoid valve connector.

15. Install the glow plugs.
  • a) Screw in the glow plugs.
  • b) Install the glow plug bar, tighten the nuts and install the seals.
