Fig. 1.116. Block diagram of the side/rear collision airbag system
The side impact airbag system consists of two airbags: a side airbag and a curtain airbag. The airbags inflate simultaneously. The rear impact airbag system consists of only a curtain airbag.
In the event of a side impact, if the side airbag sensor registers an impact, it transmits a signal to the airbag sensor unit. The latter ensures simultaneous inflation of the side airbag and curtain airbag.
In the event of a rear impact, if the curtain airbag sensor detects an impact, it transmits a signal to the airbag sensor unit via the side airbag sensor. The airbag sensor unit inflates the curtain airbag.

Fig. 1.117. Sensors of the airbag system in case of side/rear collision
Each side airbag sensor and curtain airbag sensor has a deceleration sensor. Depending on the vehicle's deceleration in a side or rear impact, the sensor is deformed and an electrical signal is generated (fig. 1.117).
Curtain airbag
The curtain airbags and side airbags deploy if the system detects a rear impact with the curtain airbag sensor.
