Pic. 1.116. Block Diagram of the Side/Rear Collision Airbag System
The side impact airbag system consists of two airbags: side and curtain airbags. The pillows fill up at the same time. The rear impact airbag system consists of a curtain airbag only.
In the event of a side collision, if the side airbag sensor detects an impact, it sends a signal to the airbag sensor unit. The latter provides simultaneous inflation of the side airbag and the curtain airbag.
In the event of a rear impact, if the curtain airbag sensor detects an impact, it sends a signal to the airbag sensor unit via the side airbag sensor. The airbag sensor module inflates the curtain airbag.

Each side and curtain airbag sensor has deceleration sensors. Depending on the deceleration of the vehicle in a side or rear impact, the sensor is deformed and an electrical signal is generated (pic. 1.117).
Curtain airbag
The curtain airbags and side airbags deploy when the system detects a rear impact with the curtain airbag sensor.
