If there is binding or strong resistance, replace the insert.
1b. (Non-contact ignition system without electronic ignition timing control).
Check distributor base plate ("breaker plate"). Rotate the base plate against the ignition timing sensor induction coil and make sure it moves with a slight snag. If it sticks or moves with increased resistance, replace the base plate along with the ignition timing sensor induction coil.
1c. (Non-contact ignition system with electronically controlled ignition timing) Check the air gap.
Using a feeler gauge, measure the gap between the rotor of the ignition timing sensor and the induction coil of this sensor (0.2-0.4mm). If the clearance is less than the specified values, replace the ignition timing sensor induction coil, centrifugal governor drive shaft, and distributor housing assembly.
2. Check drive shaft (distributor or centrifugal regulator).
A) When turning the drive shaft, make sure that it does not have burrs on the surface and is not worn. If there are signs of wear or poor fit, replace the drive shaft and housing.
b) Using a feeler gauge, measure the axial clearance of the drive shaft of the centrifugal ignition timing regulator (0.15-0.50mm). If the clearance is out of range, adjust the end clearance (see below).
3. (Contact ignition system)
A) Check the distributor cap for cracks, soot deposits, burnt or corroded electrodes and check that the center electrode is not worn.
b) Check the distributor rotor for cracks, soot deposits, burnt or corroded electrodes.
4. (With centrifugal regulator)
Make sure that the weights of the centrifugal governor do not jam when they turn on the mounting axles.
5. (With vacuum regulator)
Check the vacuum ignition timing regulator by making sure that its mechanism moves freely when a slight pressure or vacuum is applied above the operating diaphragm.
6. (Contact ignition system) Check the breaker cam by mounting it on the distributor shaft and make sure the parts match exactly. Otherwise, replace the cam and/or distributor shaft.
(Non-contact ignition system without electronic ignition timing control)
Check the ignition timing sensor shaft.
Install the ignition timing sensor shaft onto the distributor shaft and make sure they fit snugly together. Otherwise, replace the ignition timing sensor shaft, distributor shaft or distributor housing.
