Protective covers are used to prevent dirt from getting into the constant velocity joints (CV joints) of the vehicle's drive shafts, and also to retain grease packed into the joints. Grease and oil getting onto the outer surfaces of protective covers leads to their premature failure, which is why the covers should be periodically inspected and thoroughly washed with a solution of soapy water.

After cleaning the covers, check them for cracks, cuts and signs of grease leaks (refer to the accompanying illustration). Defective covers must be replaced (see chapter Transmission line). Assess the reliability of tightening the bandage straps for fastening the covers.
