Warning: run this test for 3-5 seconds to avoid damage to the stator winding.
1. Checking the retracting winding of the traction relay.
A) Disconnect the wire from the starter terminal "WITH".
b) Connect the wires from the battery to the terminals of the traction relay, as shown in the figure. Make sure the freewheel gear is out.
If the freewheel drive gear does not advance, replace the traction relay.
2. Checking the holding winding.
With the connections made as described in the previous paragraph and the freewheel drive gear extended, disconnect the wire from the terminal "WITH". Make sure the pinion gear stays extended.
If the drive gear returns inside, replace the traction relay.
3. Check if the freewheel drive gear returns.
Disconnect the wire from the traction relay housing. Make sure the freewheel drive gear is retracted inward.
If the freewheel drive gear does not retract, replace the traction relay assembly.
4. Check starter operation without load.
A) Connect the wires from the battery and from the ammeter to the starter as shown in the figure.
b) Check that the starter armature rotates evenly and the freewheel drive gear is extended. Measure the current with an ammeter.
