Precautions when installing a catalytic converter [Toyota Carina T170]

If large amounts of unburned fuel are allowed to enter the catalytic converter, it may overheat and create a fire hazard. For this reason, the following should be considered:

• Use only unleaded petrol.
• Avoid prolonged engine idling, i.e. do not allow the engine to run at high idle speed for more than 10 minutes and in idle mode for no more than 20 minutes.
• Check spark plugs for spark only when really necessary. Do not increase engine speed during the check.
• Perform the compression check as quickly as possible.
• Do not drive with a nearly empty fuel tank. This may cause false ignition, which will cause unnecessary overload of the catalytic converter.
• Do not drive the vehicle with the gear engaged and the ignition off (for example, when driving downhill).
• When disposing of the catalytic converter, do not dispose of it together with other parts contaminated with oil or grease.
