Checking the starting aid system
Check the glow duration of the glow plug indicator lamp. Turn the starter key to the ON position, measure the lamp duration.
Checking the timer (type 1)
Check timer circuits.
Disconnect the timer connector; Check wiring harness side circuits according to Table #1.
Checking the timer (type 2)
Check timer circuits.
Disconnect the timer connector; check the circuits on the wiring harness side according to table #2.
Checking Relay No. 1 Glow Plugs
Location - in the engine compartment, on the left.
2L-T (type 1)
Starting aid scheme:1 - battery; 2, 3, 8 - fusible links; 4 - ignition switch; 5 - relay No. 2 glow plugs; 6 - relay No. 1 glow plugs; 7 - glow plug resistor; 9 - glow plugs; 10 - start assist system timer; 11 - fuse; 12 - indicator of glow plugs; 13 - coolant temperature sensor
Checking the timer circuit (type 1)
Checking the timer circuit (type 2)
1. Check relay circuits.
A) Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between terminals E and G.
b) Check for continuity between terminals B and G.
If the condition of the circuits is not as specified, replace the relay.
2. Check relay operation.
A) Apply battery voltage to terminals E and G.
b) Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between terminals B and G.
If relay operation is not as specified, replace the relay.
Checking Relay No. 2 Glow Plugs
Location - in the engine compartment, on the left.
1. Check relay circuits.
A) Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between terminals E and G.
b) Check for continuity between terminals B and G. If the circuits are not as specified, replace the relay.
2L-T (type 2)
Starting aid scheme:1 - battery; 2, 3, 14 - fusible links; 4, 11 - fuses; 5 - ignition lock; 6 - relay No. 2 glow plugs; 7 - relay No. 1 glow plugs; 8 - glow plug resistor; 9 - glow plugs; 10 - start-up aid system timer built into the exhaust gas emission control unit; 12 - glow plug indicator; 13 - coolant temperature sensor.
2. Check relay operation.
A) Apply battery voltage to terminals E and G.
b) Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between terminals B and G.
If relay operation is not as specified, replace the relay.
Checking glow plugs
Check for continuity between the glow plug terminal and ground. If there is no continuity, replace the glow plug.
Attention: do not damage the protective cover of the glow plug, as this may cause an open circuit or shorten the life of the spark plug. Keep the glow plugs free of oil and gasoline, wipe any oil from the spark plug terminal and Bakelite washer with a dry cloth.
Do not apply more than 7 V to the spark plug, as this can cause the spark plug to burn out.
Ceramic spark plugs on 1KZ-T engines. Do not remove candles unless absolutely necessary. If the spark plug falls or gets hit, replace the spark plug.
Checking the glow plug resistor
Check for continuity between the resistor terminals, if there is no continuity, replace the resistor.
Checking the coolant temperature sensor
Check the condition of the temperature sensor.
Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the sensor terminals.
If the resistance is not as specified, replace the sensor.
Starting aid without series resistance (3L)
Checking the heating system
Check the glow time of the glow plug indicator light.
Move the starter switch to position "ON", and measure the indicator glow time. Glow time: approximately 6 seconds.
