Removal the timing belt [Toyota Carina T190]

1. Remove the right side of the engine guard.

2. Remove the washer reservoir.

3. Remove the power steering pump drive belt.

4. Remove the power steering pump.

a) Disconnect the hydraulic tube clamp.

b) Remove the power steering pump pulley.



c) Remove the power steering pump with the air bypass hose by unscrewing the 3 mounting bolts.



5. Remove the generator drive belt.

6. Remove the crankshaft pulley.

a) Install the special tool on the crankshaft pulley.

b) Using a special device to hold the pulley from turning, unscrew the crankshaft pulley mounting bolt.



c) Using a special puller, remove the crankshaft pulley.





7. Remove the right engine mount.

a) Unscrew 1 (2WD) or 2 (4WD) mounting nuts.



b) Loosen the bolt and nut (2WD) or nut (4WD) of the fastening and remove the shock absorber bracket of the right engine mount.



c) Unscrew 3 bolts and remove the right support shock absorber.



8. Remove timing belt cover No.2 by unscrewing 3 nuts and 5 mounting bolts,



10. Remove the timing belt guide.



11. Remove the right engine support bracket by unscrewing the 4 mounting bolts.



12. Set the piston of cylinder No.1 to TDC of the compression stroke.

Align the mark on the camshaft pulley with the parting line of the cylinder head and the cylinder head cover by turning the crankshaft pulley clockwise.



13. Remove the timing belt.



Note: If the removed belt is intended to be reused, apply an arrow indicating the direction of belt rotation in the direction of crankshaft rotation, as well as marks on the pulleys and belt.


a) Using a screwdriver, remove the timing belt tension roller spring.



Warning: Do not use pliers or the like when removing the spring.


b) Loosen the tension roller mounting bolt.

c) Remove the timing belt.

14. Remove the camshaft pulley.

a) Using a special device to hold the pulley from turning, unscrew the camshaft pulley mounting bolt.

Note: Do not allow the camshaft to turn to avoid the valves hitting the piston crowns.


b) Using a special tool, remove the camshaft pulley.



15. Remove the tensioner roller.

16. Remove the fuel injection pump drive toothed pulley.



a) Using a special device, hold the fuel injection pump drive pulley from turning and unscrew the pulley mounting nut.

Note: Do not use an inertia puller when loosening the nut.




b) Using a special tool, remove the fuel injection pump drive pulley.

Note: The pulley is spring loaded, so hold it while removing.




17. Remove the intermediate pulley.

18. Remove the oil pump drive pulley.

a) Using a special device to hold the oil pump pulley from turning, unscrew the pulley mounting nut.

b) Remove the oil pump pulley.



19. Using a special tool, remove the crankshaft toothed pulley.



During this operation the crankshaft may turn and since it is not synchronized with the camshaft, under certain circumstances the valves may be bent.
