- Clamp the cylinder head in a vice using the clamp attached to one of the exhaust manifold studs.
- Remove the camshaft. Loosen the bearing cap bolts crosswise from the edges to the middle and remove the caps
- To remove and install the valves, you will need a special tool, shown in Figure 301. Tighten the tool until the spring is compressed and then remove the valve crackers.

- To remove the valves, you can also use a piece of tubing, which is used in the same way as described for a gasoline engine.
- Remove the spring cups and springs. Remove the valve stem oil seals as shown in Figure 42 and discard immediately as they will need replacing. Keep all parts of each valve together.
- Place the valves in an inverted cardboard box and write the number next to each valve.
- Remove all remaining parts from the cylinder head.
