- Clamp the cylinder head in a vice by the bracket attached to one of the exhaust manifold studs.
- Remove the camshaft. Unscrew the bolts of the bearing caps crosswise from the edges to the middle and remove the covers
- To remove and install the valves, a special tool is required, shown in Figure 301. Tighten the tool until the spring is compressed and then remove the valve cotters.

- To remove the valves, you can also use a piece of pipe, which is used in the same way as described for a gasoline engine.
- Remove the spring cups and springs. Remove the oil seals from the valve stems, as shown in Figure 42, and discard them immediately, as they must be replaced. Keep all parts of each valve together.
- Place the valves in an upside-down cardboard box and write its number next to each valve.
- Remove all remaining parts from the cylinder head.
