If the valves have been ground in, they must be installed in the appropriate seats, since the grinding pattern of all valves is different.
- Clean the crescent plug and its seat in the cylinder head. Cover the surface of the plug with sealant and insert it into the head.
- Push the valves one by one into the valve guides. The valve stems must be generously lubricated. When reinstalling valves, insert them into the original guides. The same applies to lapped valves.
- Place oil caps on the valve stems and press them well with a piece of pipe.
- Install valve springs to cylinder head (when reinstalling springs on the same valves). Place the upper spring cups and install a valve lift to compress the springs. If the end of the valve stem protrudes from the upper spring cup, insert both halves of the valve retainers into the groove of the stem and slowly release the valve lifter.
- Hit the top of the valve stems with a plastic hammer, as shown in Figure 308. This will cause the incorrectly seated halves of the valve cotters to pop out. Place a rag on the ends of the springs to prevent the parts from flying apart.
Pic. 308. In this way, the seating of the cotters of the installed valves is checked.
- Insert the pushers and adjusting washers into their original places. Lubricate the parts.
- Lubricate the camshaft bearing journals and insert the camshaft into the cylinder head. Rotate the shaft several times until it fits into the bearing holes.
- Install the camshaft bearing caps. The bearing caps are marked and should be installed according to figure 309, that is, the top of the number should face the front of the engine.
Pic. 309. Tightening the camshaft caps. Pay attention to the markings on the lids (in a mug).
- Tighten the bearing cap bolts by hand. After this, tighten the bolts in several passes from the center outwards with a tightening torque of 18 Nm.
- Adjust the valve clearances as described in the next chapter.
- Screw in the camshaft oil seal flange from the front side. Cover the flange surface with sealant.
- Install the fluid outlet housing with a new gasket. The housing is secured with three bolts.
- If removed, install the exhaust manifold with a new gasket. Tighten 6 bolts and 2 nuts to 47 Nm.
- Apply a new gasket and tighten the fuel lines and intake manifold with 6 bolts and 2 nuts evenly crosswise to a torque of 18 Nm.
- Check the cleanliness of the surfaces of the cylinder head and cylinder block and be sure to remove any traces of the old seal. If the cylinder block has been washed, remove any remaining detergent from the cylinder head bolt threads. The cylinder head can now be installed as described in the next chapter.
