Removing
Limousine (sedan). Remove the headgear hanger and air duct to track access to the upper shock mount.
Liftback (combi). Detach the loudspeaker grille on top of the shock absorber in the area of the headgear hanger.
Loosen the wheel nuts while the vehicle is on the ground.
Mark the position of the wheel disk relative to the hub for the subsequent installation of a balanced wheel in its original place.
Raise the rear of the car.
Remove wheel.
Disconnect the pipe from the brake slave cylinder.
Attention: Place a container to collect the escaping liquid. Comply with the rules for handling brake fluid.
Disconnect the brake hose from the pipeline. Disconnect the hose at the suspension strut and remove.
If it is necessary to replace the shock absorber or coil spring, remove the boot from the top of the shock absorber and loosen the nut under the boot.
Attention: Do not unscrew the nut to the end, because it compresses the spring.
Install a stand under the suspension bracket or bring a hydraulic jack under it so that the bracket does not fall down when the shock absorber is disconnected from the softness.
To give two bolts of fastening of an amortization rack to an arm.
Unscrew the three bolts securing the upper suspension strut support and remove the strut.
If necessary, dismantle the suspension strut, see next section.
Installation
Install the shock absorber strut, securing it from above with three nuts tightened with a torque wrench. For vehicles manufactured up to 4/87 with a force of 25 Nm, for production from 5/87 - with a force of 40 Nm.
Insert the two axle bracket-to-suspension strut mounting bolts in the opposite direction of vehicle travel. Tighten nuts to 140 Nm.
Remove the jack from under the suspension.
If the shock absorber has been dismantled, tighten the self-locking nut on the shock absorber stem to 50 Nm.
Attach the brake hose to the suspension strut holder.
Connect the brake line to the brake cylinder and hose.
Bleed the brake system.
Install and fasten the wheel with nuts, observing the markings. Lower the vehicle and tighten the nuts crosswise to 105 Nm.
Install the air duct on top of the suspension strut, if removed.
Make a geometric measurement of the rear axle.
