Removal
Limousine (sedan). Remove the hat hanger and air duct to track access to the upper shock absorber support.
Liftback (combi). Disconnect the speaker grille from the top of the shock absorber in the area of the hat hanger.
Loosen the wheel nuts on a vehicle parked on the ground.
Mark the position of the wheel disk relative to the hub for subsequent installation of the balanced wheel in its original place.
Raise the rear of the vehicle.
Remove the wheel.

Disconnect the line from the brake slave cylinder.
Caution: Place a container underneath to collect any leaking liquid. Follow the safety instructions brake fluid.
Disconnect the brake hose from the pipeline. Disconnect the hose at the shock absorber strut and remove.

If it is necessary to replace the shock absorber or coil spring, remove the boot on top of the shock absorber strut and loosen the nut located under the boot.
Note: Do not unscrew the nut completely, as it compresses the spring.
Place a support under the suspension bracket or place a hydraulic jack under it to prevent the bracket from falling down when disconnecting the shock absorber from the vehicle.

Remove the two bolts securing the shock absorber strut to the bracket.

Unscrew the three bolts securing the upper support of the shock absorber strut and remove the strut.
If you need to disassemble the shock absorber strut, see the next section.
Installation
Install the shock absorber strut, securing it from above with three nuts tightened with a torque wrench. For cars manufactured up to 4/87 with a force of 25 Nm, for cars manufactured from 5/87 onwards - with a force of 40 Nm.
Insert the two bolts securing the axle bracket to the shock absorber strut in the direction opposite to the vehicle's movement. Tighten the nuts to 140 Nm.

Remove the jack from under the suspension.
If the shock absorber strut was disassembled, tighten the self-locking nut on the strut rod with a force of 50 Nm.
Secure the brake hose to the shock absorber strut holder.
Connect the brake line to the brake cylinder and hose.
Bleed the brake system.
Install and secure the wheel with nuts, observing the markings. Lower the car and tighten the nuts crosswise with a force of 105 Nm.
Install the air duct on top of the shock absorber strut if it was removed.
