Removal
Remove the cylinder head.
Remove the camshaft.
Note: If the valve mechanism parts are to be used again, they must be installed in their original locations. To avoid confusion when assembling the valve mechanism, it is recommended to place its parts in a specially designed cassette.

Engine with a working volume of 1.3 l since 8/84: Lift the upper spring bar and remove the lever with a screwdriver. Mark the lever.
Twin overhead camshaft engines and diesel: Remove the cylinder tappet and place it in the working position in the cassette.

Remove the valve springs. For this, specialized workshops use the SST 09202-70010 tool. The valve crackers and then the valves can also be removed using a standard puller.
Compress the valve springs and remove the crackers. Remove the puller. Remove the valve. Remove the upper spring plates, valve springs and spring support washer.
Remove the oil deflector cap.
Installation
If old valves and an old cylinder head are installed, the valve guides must be checked before assembly. If new valves are installed in an old cylinder head, the valves must be ground into the seats.
Clean the valves with a wire brush to remove any remaining carbon deposits.
1.3L Engine: Check rocker arms, rocker shaft and levers for cracks and wear.
Lightly lubricate the valve stems with oil and install the valves in their original places. For lapping, lubricate the chamfers of the new valves lapping paste.
Thoroughly clean all elements of the valve mechanism, lubricate moving parts with engine oil.
Always install new oil deflector caps.

Insert the valves into the cylinder head guide bushings. Make sure that the intake and exhaust valves are installed in their proper places (Fig. G-1062, IN - inlet, EX - outlet).
Install the spring support washers.
Install the valve springs and spring retainers.
Compress the valve springs with a spring compressor and insert the crackers so that they are fixed in the groove of the valve stem. Release the compressor and install the next valve.
Lightly tap the valve stem with a rubber mallet to ensure the crackers are seated.
Engine with a working volume of 1.3 l since 8/84. Install the levers and their elastic elements using a screwdriver.
DOHC and Diesel Engines: Lubricate all cylinder tappets with engine oil and insert them into the bores.
Install the camshaft.
Install a new cylinder head gasket and cylinder head.
Adjust the gaps in valve mechanism.
