1. Inspect the timing belt.

Warning: Do not bend, twist or turn the belt inside out.

Do not allow the belt to come into contact with oil, water or steam.

When installing or removing the camshaft pulley mounting bolt, the belt must not be tensioned.

If any of the defects shown in the figures are found, perform the following checks:

a) In case of premature rupture:

Check that the belt is installed correctly.

Check the belt cover gasket for damage and correct installation.

b) If the belt teeth are cracked or damaged, check the camshaft fastening.

(This material is taken from a resource: «toyotaman»)

c) If there are cracks or noticeable signs of wear on the back of the belt, check for corresponding grooves on the tension roller and water pump.

d) If wear or damage is observed on only one side of the belt, check the belt guide and the alignment of the pulleys.

d) If there is noticeable wear on the belt teeth, check the belt cover for damage, then check the gasket for proper installation. Check for foreign material on the pulley teeth.

Replace the belt if necessary.

2. Check the smooth rotation of the tension roller. If necessary, replace the tension roller.

3. Check the condition of the tension spring.

a) Measure the length of the tension spring in its free state (44.4 - 45.4 mm). If the free length of the spring does not meet the specified limits, replace the tension spring.

b) Measure the spring tension force at a given length in the mounted state.

Tensile force when assembled: 5.42 - 5.98 kg with a length when assembled of 52.1 mm.

If the tension force in the assembled state does not correspond to the specified limits, replace the tension spring.
