Removal

Attention! Accurate adherence to valve timing is very important, but for DOHC engines it is extremely important. Incorrect installation of the phases can seriously damage the engine. Be careful when installing the timing belt and before the first start after repair, check the coincidence of the marks again.

Note: Do not turn the crankshaft or camshafts with the timing belt removed, and do not turn the engine by the camshaft gears. Turn the engine only in its normal direction (clockwise).

Timing drive assembly

1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

Warning! If the car stereo system is equipped with a security code, make sure you have the correct combination to activate the audio system before disconnecting the battery!

2. Remove the spark plugs.

3. Remove all components that interfere with the timing belt cover removal.

4. Remove the timing belt cover (1) (refer to the illustration above).

5. Turn the crankshaft clockwise and align the timing marks (2).

6. Make sure that the marks (4) also match.

7. Loosen and completely unscrew the timing belt tensioner assembly mounting bolts.

8. Remove the tensioner assembly (6), unscrew the bolt (7) of the tensioner pulley and remove the pulley (8).

9. Remove the timing belt.

Examination

See the test description for the 2UZ-FE engine (Section Removal, condition check and installation of the timing belt and timing drive gears).

Installation

1. Secure the timing belt tensioner rod by driving a 1.5mm thick stud into the holes in the rod and the tensioner itself.

2. Place the timing belt on the pulleys and make sure the timing marks match.

3. Install the tensioner pulley and tighten its mounting bolts to 34 Nm.

4. Install the tensioner and tighten its mounting bolts to 13 Nm.

5. Remove the locking pin, thereby tightening the belt.

6. Turn the crankshaft two revolutions clockwise. Make sure that the timing marks match. If not, repeat the timing belt installation and tensioning procedure.

7. Install the remaining components in the reverse order. Tighten the fasteners to the required torque.

8. Reset the K/L timing belt replacement readings. To do this, contact a Toyota service station.

9. After replacing the timing belt, check the operation of the high-pressure fuel pump.
