1. Remove the stator and starter armature assembly.
Having unscrewed a nut, disconnect a wire from the plug of the traction relay of a starter. Remove the two tie-downs (through) bolts and remove the stator together with the armature.
Remove the felt pad (1.0 kW starter) or o-ring (1.4 kW starter).
2. Remove the starter housing, freewheel and gears.
Unscrew the two screws and remove the following parts from the traction relay:
(1.0 kW starter) starter housing (1), idle gear and bearing (2), freewheel assembly (3), return spring (4).
(1.4 kW starter) starter housing (1), drive gear (2), idle gear and bearing (3), freewheel assembly (4), return spring (5).
3. Using a magnetized rod, remove the steel ball from the freewheel bore.
4. Remove the brush holders.
A) Loosen the two screws and remove the manifold side cover.
b) (1.4 kW starter) Remove the sealing ring.
V) Use a screwdriver to release the spring and remove the brush from the brush holder. Disconnect all four brushes and remove the brush holder.
5. Remove the armature from the stator.
