Removing
Remove shock absorber.
Remove the cover from the rack rod.
The helical spring is compressed. To remove the shock absorber, it is necessary to additionally compress the coil spring, unloading the spring cups. The spring is compressed by a special tool.
Caution: The shock absorber nut may only be loosened after the coil spring has been compressed.
TOYOTA specialist workshops use a special tool to compress the spring. Compress the spring about 10 mm.
Attention: Install the spring compressor so that the coils of the spring are securely gripped at three evenly spaced points. The spring has a large preload. There is a risk of injury!
Give the spring fastening nut with a bent key or head, holding the stem from turning.
Remove the suspension strut parts in order. Caution: If the spring needs to be replaced, release it slowly. If only the shock absorber is replaced, the spring does not decompress. Check the shock absorber and scrap it, see next section.
Installation
Slide the compression stroke buffer onto the shock absorber rod.
Install the lower support cup and compressed coil spring. Make sure that the spring lies correctly on the lower and upper support cups.
Install the top support cup.
Set the top plate so that the arrow next to the inscription "OUT" pointed away from the car.
Install the dust ring and upper strut support.
Screw on a new self-locking nut and tighten it to 45 Nm.
Slowly release the spring.
Install shock absorber in place.
Lubricate the shock absorber spring mounting nut with grease and cover with a dust boot.
