It is not necessary to remove the wheel brake cylinders to overhaul them. However, special care should be taken to ensure cleanliness. When overhauling a wheel brake cylinder, consider the following points:
  • Replace all rubber seals. Repair kits are available and all parts of the repair kit must be used during assembly.
  • Disassembly and assembly must be carried out in clean conditions.
  • Before installation, place all rubber seals in clean brake fluid.

When ordering a repair kit, please specify the chassis number and model, as the wheel brake cylinders have been modified. Remove the wheel brake cylinders as follows:
  • Remove the brake pads (chapter 15.3.1).
  • Unscrew the union nut of the brake pipe from the rear side of the brake shield.
  • Unscrew the wheel brake cylinder from the brake shield.

Disassembly of the wheel brake cylinder is carried out using Figure 258:

Fig. 258. Assembly drawing of the wheel brake cylinder: 1. Rubber dust cap; 2 Piston; 3. Piston cuff; 4. Return spring; 5. Cylinder body.

  • Remove the dust caps (1) from both sides.
  • Push both pistons (2) and other internal parts out of the cylinder.
  • Use your fingers to remove the seals (3) from the pistons
  • Wash all parts in clean brake fluid or alcohol. If the cylinder mirrors are scratched, replace the cylinder. Assembly and installation are performed in the reverse order. The edges of the cuffs should not bend when the pistons are pushed in. Lubricate the cuffs and the inner sides of the dust caps with rubber grease.
