Checking the operation of the fan
If the radiator fan does not turn on or off, the cause may be a relay or temperature switch. First, you should check the electrical connections for breaks or poor contacts. If it turns out that the defect cannot be eliminated by simply replacing the switch or relay, it is recommended that you contact a workshop, as some checks are required. The operation of the temperature switch is checked as follows:
- Disconnect the temperature switch connector. On both engines, the connector is located on the housing of the intake device (4 in Figure 125 for a 1.6 L engine, 9 in Figure 126 for a 2.0 L Engine).
- Turn on the ignition and check if the fan is working. This is evidence that the relay is OK. Otherwise, inspect the fan relay, fan motor and main
- Start the engine and bring it to a temperature of about 88°C (insert a thermometer into the radiator filler neck - remove the cap only after steam has been released). At the next check the temperature should not be lower than 78°C.
- Turn on the ignition.
- Check if the fan is working.
- Wait until the temperature drops below 78°C and check if the fan turns off. If it works, replace the temperature switch.
- If the fan does not function, contact a workshop.
4.5.2. Removing and installing the fan
- Drain the coolant (chapter 4.1).
- Disconnect battery.
- Disconnect the temperature switch connector. To locate the connector, trace the routing of the cable harness close to the fan.
- Unscrew the fan casing and remove the casing together with the fan.
- Unscrew the fan motor from the casing and remove the impeller from the motor shaft after unscrewing the nut.
- Installation is in the reverse order. After installation, connect the battery.
