- Drain the oil from the gearbox. Remember that either automatic transmission fluid or gearbox oil is being filled.
- In accordance with the instructions in Chapter 11.1, disconnect the drive shaft from the gearbox. Depending on the engine type, the middle drive shaft may also have to be removed and unscrewed from the cylinder block.
- On the C52 gearbox, unscrew the cover on the left side and press the oil seal out of the cover.
- On the S50 gearbox on the left side, and on other gearboxes on the right side, use the appropriate impact puller to remove the oil seal. Figure 172 shows the use of the tool. If such a tool is not available, you can screw one or two screws into the oil seal and pry up the oil seal with a screwdriver inserted under the heads of the screws.
Pic. 172. Removing the oil seal from the gearbox side. A side cover must be screwed on the left side of the S50 type gearbox.
- Lubricate the lips of the new oil seal and press it either into the cover or into the gearbox without damaging the oil seal.
- Install the drive shaft and, if present, the intermediate shaft as described in Chapter 11.1. Check the fit of the retaining ring in the shaft groove. There should be a noticeable gap of 2-3 mm. In addition, it should be impossible to pull the shaft out by hand.
- With the intermediate shaft installed, screw the support onto the cylinder block. Fill the gearbox with oil (box C52) or liquid (box S50). Both boxes require about 2.6 liters. Close the filler plug.
