Some designs have a short drive shaft connected to the differential gear and which drives from the transmission to the drive shaft itself. Bolts are used to connect the differential output shaft and drive shaft flanges. Like a conventional drive shaft, a snap ring is installed on the short output shaft. An impact puller is required to remove this transmission shaft after removing the drive shaft. Before installing the shaft, replace the retaining ring at the end of the shaft. Insert the short one into the gearbox and then tap it with a soft metal drift until the circlip snaps into its groove. To check the fit of the locking ring, move the shaft in different directions. The shaft must have a play of at least 2-3 mm.
