Apply the coating at a temperature not lower than +12°C, but not under the rays of the bright sun and not in strong winds.
Rust removal
Tape around the area to be repaired with tape to protect against accidental damage to adjacent surfaces.
Remove rust with a triangular scraper, screwdriver or 120 grit sandpaper.
Sand the surface 10-20 mm wide around the damaged area with 320 grit sandpaper.
On body parts with a zinc coating, clean only to the ground, if possible without touching the zinc.
Application of anti-corrosion primer («Primer»)
Rinse with nitro thinner and dry the damaged surface.
In order to avoid incompatibilities when applying coatings, the primer and the topcoat applied later must be from the same manufacturer. Otherwise, the varnish may blister or wrinkle later.
The soil is sprayed onto the surface from a distance of 25 cm. To prevent soil from getting on adjacent surfaces, they must be covered with paper (in particular newspapers).
After 10-15 minutes after applying the first layer, the procedure can be repeated. If puttying is required, the surface must be dry beforehand.
Puttying
There are two types of putty: two-component and thin. The two-component putty is mixed with a hardener shortly before application. It cures very quickly and must be processed immediately. It is used to eliminate large irregularities on the body panels. Thin putty is plastic and is used to eliminate small irregularities. It can be applied in several layers. Both types of putties are sold in tubes and jars. Putty can also be in aerosol packaging.
Attention: Despite the fact that on the cans in which the putty is packed, it is often written that it can be applied directly to the surface, it is still recommended to initially apply a primer to the repaired surface to protect against corrosion.
Apply a two-component putty to the surface to be repaired and let it harden. Follow the putty manufacturer's instructions when working.
After drying, sand the surfaces by hand or pre-treat. 180 grit sandpaper should be used for this. Wet sanding can be done. In this case, it is necessary to wash off the sanded surface with water from time to time.
Finally, wipe and dry the surface.
Coat the surface with a thin putty using a wide, flexible spatula and allow it to dry for at least a few hours. On steep surfaces, it is recommended to apply a thin aerosol putty.
Depending on the thickness of the putty, dry it for 2-3 hours.
Coating grinding
Sanding paper can have different grain sizes. The smaller the number, I denote the graininess, the coarser the paper. For sanding with a two-component putty, sandpaper with a grit of 180-240 is recommended. Filler putty and old varnish should be sanded wet with 360 grit paper. For the final wet sanding, 600 grit paper is recommended.
Filled areas are sanded with wet 360 grit paper. In this case, it is necessary to constantly moisten the surface with a sponge soaked in clean water.
For fine sanding, we recommend the use of a special wet sanding paper, grit 600. This also sands adjacent paint surfaces. Grinding must be done only in the longitudinal direction of the car. At the same time, the traces remaining as a result of grinding are less noticeable.
Surface preparation for painting
Before painting, the repaired surface, as well as the varnish surfaces adjacent to it, one or two palms wide, must be cleaned of grease and silicone residues. Silicone remover works best for this purpose.
After grinding, thoroughly clean the repaired surface. Paste adjacent surfaces with paper and adhesive tape. When painting the fenders, also glue the tires and shock absorbers.
Paste over the surface of the body so that the borders of the surface to be painted are the trim strips and the edges of the body, because streaks of ink appear on the borders of the overlay paper.
Moisten the floor with water to eliminate dust.
