Removing
Disconnect ground cable (-) from the battery.
Attention: As a result, the records of the on-board computer are erased, in particular, the fault records and the radio code. Before disconnecting the battery, read the contents of the section "Removing and installing the battery".
Unscrew the two screws and remove the distributor cover.
Disconnect the vacuum hose from the distributor.
Fix the electrical wires with adhesive tape and disconnect them from the distributor.
Loosen the fixing screws.
Remove the ignition distributor from the cylinder head.
Setting the TDC of the first cylinder
To install the distributor in place, it is necessary to set the piston of the first cylinder to TDC.
Engine displacement 1.3 l and 1.6 l (4A-L, 4A-LC)
Remove spark plug for cylinder #1.
Close the hole for the spark plug of cylinder No. 1 with your finger. Turn the crankshaft in the direction of the arrow until the marking on the crankshaft pulley matches the marking "0" on the timing belt cover. At the same time, the finger of the hand should feel the pressure of the air compressed in the cylinder. If no pressure is felt, turn the crankshaft 360°clockwise.
1.6L engine (4A-F, 4A-FE)
Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the mark on the crankshaft pulley matches the mark "0" on the timing belt cover. At the same time, the slots in the cylinder head hole for the ignition distributor must be as shown in fig. If the position of the splines is not as shown in the figure, the crankshaft must be rotated 360°clockwise.
1.6L engine (4A-GE, 4A-GEL).
Remove the oil filler cap on the cylinder head cover.
Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the mark on the crankshaft pulley matches the mark "0" on the timing belt cover. At the same time, the hole in the camshaft must be visible through the oil filler neck, as shown in the figure. If the hole is not visible, rotate the crankshaft 360°clockwise.
Installation
Check the oil seal on the ignition distributor support for damage and replace if necessary.
1.3L engine since 7/84, 1.6L (4A-L, 4A-LC, 4A-GE, 4A-GEL)
Install the distributor, making sure that the hole with the cylindrical pin on the distributor gear must match the marking on the distributor support.
1.3L engine since 8/84, 1.6L (4A-F, 4A-FE)
Install the distributor. In this case, the mark on the distributor shaft must match the mark on the distributor housing.
Engine displacement 1.3 l since 8/84: Align the marking on the distributor with the protrusion on the fixing nut of the cylinder head cover. Insert and tighten by hand, without tightening, the fixing screws.
1.3 l engine up to 7/84 and 1.6 l: Install the distributor in such a way that the threaded holes are in the center of the longitudinal grooves. Insert and tighten the fixing screws by hand without tightening them.
Clean the inside surface of the distributor cap. Place it in place and fasten with two screws or secure with two clips.
Connect ground cable to battery (-).
Set the time on the clock, if any, and enter the security code into the radio.
Check ignition timing, adjust if necessary.
Tighten the distributor mounting bolts to 20 Nm.
