Similar checks and adjustments should be made during maintenance. With other types of ignition systems, the ignition timing does not usually change due to mechanical wear. However, TOYOTA prescribes inspection of such ignition systems during maintenance.
To facilitate control of the ignition timing, it is recommended to apply markings with white paint to the crankshaft belt pulley and to the timing belt cover.
To check the ignition timing adjustment, you will need a tachometer and a stroboscope.
Engine with a working volume of 1.3 l up to 7/84 year of production. Adjust the angle of the closed state of the contacts, see the corresponding section.
Start the engine, warm it up to operating temperature and stop it.

Connect the tachometer and stroboscope according to the manufacturer's instructions. If the engine has an ignition distributor with a built-in ignition coil and does not have a built-in tachometer, the number of revolutions can be measured using the free, green plug. This plug is fixed to the distributor housing.

For some engine models, it is necessary to short-circuit the terminals E1 and T in the diagnostic plug located on the left shock absorber strut. The engine models for which this must be done are listed at the end of the section.

Remove the vacuum hose of the vacuum regulator, if any, from the ignition distributor and close it with a technological plug in the form of, for example, a bolt. For a two-stage vacuum regulator, remove the hose only from the second stage, see the figure.
Start the engine and adjust to the value specified in the table (at the end of the section) speed.

Point the strobe light at the TDC marking on the crankshaft pulley.
The ignition timing is set correctly when the mark on the pulley appears to be aligned with the mark on the timing belt cover. The ignition timing is given in the table at the end of the section.

If ignition timing adjustment is required, loosen the terminal connection screws on the distributor and adjust the ignition timing by turning the distributor.
Tighten the screws on the distributor to 20 Nm.
Remove the vacuum hose plug and place the hose onto the distributor.
Remove the electrical wire (jumper of diagnostic plug).
Disconnect the control devices with the ignition off.
In a specialized workshop, the adjustment of the centrifugal regulator weights and the vacuum regulator at different speeds are additionally checked. This is only required if there are faults in the ignition system.
Check the idle speed and need to adjust.
