Note. The front crankshaft oil seal is installed in the oil pump, which can be removed (see Section Removal, condition check and installation of the oil pump) to facilitate seal replacement.
2. Measure the seat depth of the old oil seal. Carefully cut the lips of the front crankshaft oil seal with a sharp razor.
3. Gently prying with a special tool or screwdriver, remove the old oil seal from its seat (refer to accompanying illustration). Try not to leave scratches and scuffs on the surface of the shaft pin or the walls of the seat, the presence of such defects will lead to a quick failure of the new stuffing box.
4. Clean the inside surface of the seat. Lightly lubricate the outer edge of the new oil seal with clean engine oil, fill the lips of the oil seal with universal grease.
5. Using an appropriately sized socket head or a piece of pipe of a suitable diameter as a mandrel, seat a new oil seal in its seat (refer to accompanying illustration) (the mandrel should rest only on the hard outer edge of the end face of the stuffing box) to the same depth as the old one was sunk. Make sure the seal is seated correctly.
6. Replace the gear (A) crankshaft/camshaft (ov) and timing belt (see Section Removing, checking the condition and installing the gas distribution belt and timing gears). Take care not to damage the section of the gear wheel responsible for the operation of the CMP sensor.
7. Start the engine and check for signs of oil leaks around the seal seat (ov).
