Warning! Before doing any work near the airbag unit, steering column or instrument panel, turn off the SRS to avoid injury if it is accidentally deployed (see Onboard electrical equipment). SRS circuit wiring is easily identified by the yellow color of the insulation. To avoid damage to the SRS system, make sure that the steering shaft does not turn after removing the steering wheel. Block the column with the ignition key with the front wheels straight ahead.
1. Bring the front wheels of the car into a straight line. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery first, then the positive one.
Attention! If the stereo system installed in the car is equipped with a security code, before disconnecting the battery, make sure that you have the correct combination to activate the audio system!
2. On appropriately equipped models, deactivate the SRS (see Onboard electrical equipment).
3. Prying off, remove the two plastic plugs installed on the side surfaces of the steering wheel assembly and loosen the airbag module fastening screws located inside the opened sockets (refer to accompanying illustration). The removed screws will remain locked in their sockets.
4. Remove the airbag module from the steering wheel assembly.
Attention! Try not to turn the removed airbag module so that it faces you! Lay the module face up in a safe place.
5. Disconnect the wiring interfering with the removal of the steering wheel.
6. Loosen the steering wheel nut, then mark the assembly position relative to the steering shaft with paint (refer to accompanying illustration).
7. Using a special puller, remove the wheel from the steering column (refer to accompanying illustration).
Attention! To avoid misalignment of the SRS contact cable reel, do not allow the steering shaft to be turned when the steering wheel is removed. In case of forced violation of this requirement, the drum must be centered before installing the wheel in place.
8. Make sure that the SRS contact cable reel is properly centered by manually turning its housing counterclockwise until a firm resistance occurs, then return it approximately three turns back and achieve alignment of the arrow marks.
9. Install the steering wheel in its regular place, following the correct alignment of the landing marks applied during the dismantling process. Tighten the fixing nut to the required torque.
