Removing the steering gear
1. Disconnect the bipod and tie rod.
A) Loosen the bipod mounting nut, then remove the pin from the trailing link.
b) Using a puller, remove the linkage from the bipod.
V) Using a puller, disconnect the bipod from the steering gear.
3. Remove the steering gear.
A) Unscrew the four mounting bolts and remove the steering gear.
Steering gear disassembly
1. Loosen the bleed screw and drain the oil from the crankcase.
2. Remove the end cap.
A) Loosen the locknut and four bolts.
b) Remove the end cap by turning the adjusting screw clockwise.
3. Tap the end of the bipod shaft with a plastic hammer and remove the shaft.
4. Using a special wrench, unscrew the lock nut.
5. Using the special wrench, unscrew the adjusting screw.
6. Remove the screw/ball nut assembly from the housing.
Caution: Do not disassemble the ball nut. Be careful not to hit the balls on the bottom of the screw.
Steering check
1. Checking the screw assembly with ball nut.
A) Check the screw for wear and damage.
b) Check that the ball nut moves down smoothly under its own weight.
Repair or replace the screw if necessary.
Caution: Be careful not to hit the balls on the bottom of the screw.
2. If necessary, replace the bearing.
3. Checking the axial clearance of the steering arm shaft.
A) Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance.
- Limit clearance - 0.05 mm or less
b) If the gap exceeds the maximum allowable, then pick up a new washer.
- Washer thickness - 1.95; 2.00; 2.05 mm
4. Check the end cap and cap bushing for wear and damage. Measure the inside diameter of the bushing.
- Inner diameter: 32.000 - 32.025 mm
Replace cover if necessary.
5. Check the steering gear housing for wear and damage. Measure the inside diameter.
- Inner diameter: 32.000 - 32.025 mm
Steering gear assembly
1. Apply MP type grease to bushings, bearings and seals.
2. Install the propeller bearings on the shaft and insert the propeller/ball nut assembly into the steering gear housing.
3. Install and adjust the rear bearing holder.
A) Apply sealant to the holder and tighten it with a special wrench.

b) Measure the bearing preload in both directions. Tighten the adjusting screw if necessary.
- Preload (elementary) - 0.34 - 0.49 Nm
V) While holding the rear bearing holder with a wrench, tighten the locknut.
- Tightening torque - 147 Nm
Note: Check the bearing preload again.
5. Install the pitman shaft.
A) Install the adjusting screw and thrust washer of the bipod shaft.
b) Screw the ball nut onto the center of the screw. Insert the pitman arm shaft into the steering box until the center teeth engage.
6. Install the end cap.
A) Apply sealant to the gasket and cover.
b) Install the gasket on the cover.
V) Loosen the adjusting screw as much as possible.
G) Tighten the cover with four bolts.
- Tightening torque - 98 Nm
7. Set screw/ball nut assembly to neutral position.
A) Count the total number of turns by turning in one direction and turn in the opposite direction half the number of turns.
b) This will be the neutral position, which must be marked with alignment marks on the shaft and housing.
8. Using the special tool, adjust the preload.
Note: The screw/ball nut assembly must be in the neutral position.
- Preload (elementary) - 0.78 - 1.08 Nm
9. While holding the adjusting screw with a screwdriver, tighten the locknut.
- Tightening torque - 44 Nm
Note: Check the preload again.
10. Checking the play of the steering arm shaft.
Align the marks on the steering arm shaft and on the arm itself. Check that the pitman shaft has no play within 100°of rotation to either side of the neutral position.
11. Fill with oil.
Steering gear installation
1. Install the steering gear and tighten the bolts.
- Tightening torque - 73 Nm
2. Install the steering column assembly.
3. Install the bipod and tie rod.
A) Align the marks on the bipod and on the shaft. Put the bipod on the shaft.
b) Install the tie rod in the bipod, tighten with the nut and install the pin.
- Tightening torque - 91 Nm
V) Tighten the bipod mounting nut.
Torque:
