15.1.1. Brake pedal height
The brake pedal height should be between 151 and 161 mm and measured at the location (3) in Figure 234. If the brake pedal height does not correspond to these values, make the adjustment as follows:
Pic. 234. Adjusting the height of the brake pedal, pedal pusher lever, brake light switch, pedal height
- Loosen the locknut (2) (pic. 234) brake light switch and unscrew the brake light switch.
- Loosen the pushrod locknut (1) brake pedals.
- Change the length of the push rod until the specified brake pedal height is achieved. Pedal height (3) measured from the floor to the rubber pad of the brake pedal.
- Screw in the brake light switch until the pin touches the brake pedal.
- Tighten both locknuts without changing the adjustment.
15.1.2. Free play of the brake pedal
Turn off the engine and press the brake pedal until the vacuum in the system is released. Grasp the brake pedal with your index finger and thumb and move it in both directions. If the free play goes beyond 3-6 mm, the length of the pusher rod should be changed as described above. After adjustment (locknuts are tightened) check the pedal height again, as it is possible that it has gone astray again. Start the engine and make sure that the brake pedal has free play even when the engine is running.
15.1.3. Adjusting the hand brake
Pull the handbrake lever up and count the number of clicks. The handbrake should lock the rear wheels at 4-7 clicks with drum brakes installed or at 5-8 clicks with disc brakes installed on the rear wheels. If the handbrake lever can be pulled out by 7 or 8 teeth, rearrange the nut at the end of the handbrake cable after unscrewing the locknut, as shown in Figure 235. To do this, remove the console. The brake pads are installed after the handbrake is applied. If the handbrake is not used for a long time, as happens in countries with long winters, this work should be performed more often. Only then can the handbrake be checked and adjusted perfectly. Check that the rear wheels turn freely when the handbrake is released.
