As already mentioned, you should avoid repairing the steering. The toothed rack and the steering gear housing are the most important parts of the steering, and if they are worn out, it is better to replace the steering. It is possible to install a steering from the exchange fund. You will be informed about this at the service station. But when the inner or outer joint breaks, there are no difficulties with replacing the steering rods. The outer joint of the steering rod is replaced as follows:
  • Clamp the steering in a vice. Do not tighten the vice too much so as not to dent the housing.
  • Mark the thread of the corresponding steering rod, loosen the lock nut and unscrew the steering rod joint. If both steering rod ends are unscrewed, mark the left and right steering rods with paint or a tag.
  • After loosening the mounting clamps, remove the steering cuffs.
  • If new cuffs are installed, install them, making sure that they are identical. Insert the wire rings into the cuff recesses and tighten. The ends should be facing upwards, as shown in Figure 228.

  • Screw on the steering rod joints and tighten them manually according to the marks. When installing new parts, bring the size from the center of the steering tip to the connecting surface of the bushing to approximately the original length. Then tighten the lock nuts. Set both steering rods to the same length.

When replacing the internal parts of the steering rod, the above described work should be performed, and then:
  • With the steering control clamped in a vice, bend back the locking nut on the toothed rack with a chisel (Fig. 229).

  • Hold the toothed rack from the inside with a wrench and unscrew the steering rods. Mark the rods according to the installation side.
  • Grease the ball joint of the new steering rod well, insert it into the housing and screw the housings to the ends of the toothed rack, tightening to a torque of 72 Nm. Adjust the lock washer, aligning the nose with the cutout in the housing.
  • As shown in Figure 229, hammer the nose of the countersink with a chisel, but from the other side.
  • Install the cuff as described above and tighten with your fingers according to the marks. If a new part is installed, bring the dimension from the center of the steering tip to the front surface of the bushing to approximately the original length. Then tighten the locknuts. Set both steering rods to the same length.
